Scenic design, which is also known as set design or stage design, is directly related to the art of Interior Designing. Interior design is such an art form which requires a complete blend of science and art along with the artistic approach towards designing interiors of homes, offices, apartments or any other interiors.
Set design involves designing sets based upon the script it has. Just putting all the props and elements together will never make an appealing set. Before the actual shoot or performance begins the set itself should tell a story. The set should be the first character to be displayed.
Scenic designing requires a lot of research over the theme, textures, layouts, colour scheme and various market research. Sourcing is one of the key aspects of it where you go out for sourcing required materials for the set it may involve international travel too.

TELL A STORY
The sole purpose of the set design is to support the story that the script wants. Set designers must keep in mind the story in while designing costume, sound, lighting to serve the core part of the story. For example, if the story is of a teacher who is suffering from heavy depression, the set has to have the element to support his profession & problems at same time. Set designers must identify each location, as well as if it changes over the course of a scene or when a new scene returns to a prior location. They also identify what props are specifically mentioned in a script or will be necessary for a scene to successfully occur.   

AMBIENCE

Ambience is the look & feel of a particular set based upon a theme. Aspects of a good ambience are supported by light & sound. Every space in this world has an ambience that enables us to distinguish two separate things. Every time you go into a movie theater you see a totally different sound, lighting, appearance and everything, which is a big part of an interior design. Even along before you enter the theater you start feeling how it will feel once you reach there. A good ambience helps us feel more, understand more about the concept of the story. If I say School, it gives us a different feel than if I say a bar. Every space whether interior or exterior has different ambience.
